I’m sick of working!!

I am feeling a little grumpy today. I am so sick of working for a living. Oscar Wilde once said that a man who does what he loves for a living never works a day in his life. I don’t know about that because I work to make someone else rich. I should have gone to college. I had a full scholarship to Duke! I could have been an archaeologist!! Charlie Daniels once said rich man goes to college and the poor man goes to work. Ain’t that the truth. I have spent my life just trying to get ahead. There always seems to be one more bill to pay or one more thing that requires just a little more money.

But I know that I have no room to complain. Things could be soooo much worse and I am so blessed. I have a wonderful girlfriend and we have a nice home. We have wonderful date nights and there is nothing I need that I don’t have and couldn’t get. I just hate working. I feel like there is so much more I could be doing with my time.

Halloween is over

The Halloween stuff is put away and Halloween is over. It;s a little sad. We had a wonderful Halloween season. We had lots of trick or treaters and the yard looked GREAT! We are still getting compliments from the neighborhood. Can’t wait till next year!

OKC Welcomes New Coaches

Stone, Wortham bring decades of experience.

NOV. 4, 2008: For the first time since 2002, the Oklahoma City Lightning has a new pair of head coaches.

John Stone and Les Wortham, who have played and coached at levels from high school to the National Football League, will lead the Lightning in the 2009 spring season of the National Women’s Football Association. Both coaches previously served as assistants with the team.

Stone, who operates the defense, brings 23 years of coaching experience – including three national championships with the Oklahoma BadBoyz men’s semi-pro team. He played linebacker and split end for Del City High School, and linebacker for the University of Oklahoma.

A certified teacher, Stone holds bachelor’s degrees in math (from OU) and anatomy/kinesiology (from Oklahoma City University), and a Master’s of Education (from OCU). He said his anatomy and kinesiology degree required extensive first aid certifications that come in handy on the sidelines.

“It’s always good to have someone around who knows about muscles and muscle movement to help treat injuries and keep minor pains from becoming major problems,” the coach said.

While Stone works with the defensive coaching staff, Wortham leads the offense.

A former drill instructor in the United States Marine Corps, Wortham played fullback for Boise State University. A few years after he worked out for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks at a free agent camp, Wortham played two games for the team during the 1986 players’ strike.

“I really enjoyed my chance to play in the NFL,” Wortham said. “But I eventually had to make a choice to support my family. I had to make a living.”

He made that choice when he accepted an offer to work for Boeing Aircraft, but he didn’t completely leave the sport. Wortham played semi-pro football for eight more years in Seattle, San Diego and Ontario, Canada. And during the two years he coached the Dallas Colts, that team lost only one game.

One of Wortham’s most-treasured accomplishments has been coaching Lincoln Coleman, who later played running back for the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, both he and Stone have worked with future and former NFL players, as well as college All-Americans and other elite athletes.

Stone and Wortham join a Lightning team with an overall record of 52 wins and 10 losses in seven years of competition. The team has played in two NWFA National Championship Games, and has earned a playoff berth every year since joining the league in 2003.

General Manager Jan Demery said the new coaching staff is part of a larger move to improve the entire team, which is a not-for-profit sports organization operated by the team itself.

“Our new structures and people will help us meet the goal of not only one or more championships, but of developing a larger vision,” Demery said. “We’re ready to take the next step toward building a solid future for women in all sports, especially football.”

Both coaches said they have enjoyed working with female football players while with the Lightning.

“In many ways, women are easier to coach than men,” Stone said. “By the time men finish college, they have played for 20 years with different coaches, different techniques and different bad habits to break.

“Women are more eager to learn,” he said.

Wortham said coaching women’s football has been quite an accomplishment for him, too.

“To me, it’s a coach’s dream to teach people who have never played the sport,” Wortham said.

Stone agrees.

“You do have to coach women differently,” Stone said. “But the difference is because of the levels of experience, not the gender.”

BBQ & Banshees at The County Line

Oklahoma City, OK- The County Line Restaurant has a magnificent past. It has held haunting tales for the past 20 years and is still going strong. As new staff members enter the County Line crew, I have found that just dropping in to check on the ghost stories to be one of my all time favorite things to do, oh and I can’t forget the great BBQ!

In the 1930’s during the Prohibition days and when society declared that pointing fingers at what was socially acceptable was the rage, the former Oak Cliff club was purchased by a Greek immigrant. The then known as Oklahoma’s Kentucky Club paved the way for Oklahoma City nightlife. Booze, women, dancing, fashion and of course gambling were some of the key elements that kicked the Kentucky Club into gear and deemed to be one of the city’s hot spots. Not only did the Kentucky Club attract the local rum guzzlers the club attracted high rollers from all across the nation. Rumors of busted up raids, insider informants and of course murder line the walls of the club today. The club was infamous for it’s entertainment and a great place where you could grab a bite of food and a stiff drink in the days where money was scarce but living the high life was demanded. The club was designed after the Kentucky Club in, well, Kentucky. Stable style seating where a dame and her beau could enjoy a nice quite dinner or distinguished gentleman could enjoy a good cigar and place a bet or two on the horses. Those with a sense of adventure could venture out and experience a lit up dance floor for a night on the town. The Kentucky Club was one of Oklahoma’s hottest night spots and as we all know, where there is glitz and glamor, there is always a dark side.

After obtaining a handful of lawsuits and closings, the club flourish for a great number of years. Murder, scandal and secrets were starting rebuild the reputation of the Kentucky Club one mishap at a time.

The history of the Kentucky Club is a fun one, if you are into ladies of the night, booze and the occasional mafia or political tie in. The restaurant is now known as the County Line. Probably more famous for the BBQ than the ghosts, but here in Oklahoma, I do believe it’s one of the most whispered about establishments in the state.

Come for the BBQ stay for the ghosts?

After meeting up with the County Line this past month. I was able to check in with some new staff members about the haunting tales and to see if they are still taking place, oh and of course to have some BBQ! I decided to go around and take some photos of the joint since it was pretty close to closing time. My team member Mandy had brought her tape recorder just for taking notes. After a nice evening of walking around, admiring the artwork and images from the past we were quickly reminded that the “ghosts” of the County Line are still swinging away, even today.

While taking some photos of the annex building out on the porch, I heard a man say “excuse me”. It caught me off guard, I never hear “voices” while out and about. It was just Mandy and myself out there, nobody else was around. she played the tape back and yes, we got the voice of the man saying “excuse me”, and my shocking reaction of course! After reviewing the audio the next day, Mandy discovered that she had obtained a few great EVP’s during our non-ghost hunting adventure. It just goes to prove that the “ghosts” that are still lurking around the County Line enjoy people more when they are just hanging out, for no particular reason.

This September and October I will be hosting a series of dinners at the County Line Restaurant. BBQ & Banshees is the theme. If you are interested in ghosts or interested in BBQ and a good time, this intimate event is for you. Come and learn about the County Line and of course some of the states most haunted places. Well known authors and speakers will delight you over dinner as they share tales from Oklahoma’s past and present. Come for the food and entertainment but stay for the ghost hunt. After dinner guests will be allowed to see for themselves if the ghosts of the County Line are just rumors or the result of too much cold beer and great BBQ.

These events are open to the public and all ages are welcome. Bring the family, bring a date! The cost of the evening is cheaper than a boring night out on the town and you will have memories that will last you a lifetime. Don’t worry, singles are welcome and groups.
